Katary Scholarship Award

The Award
The Sally L. D. Katary Scholarship Award is available to Members of the SSEA who are either Graduate Students or postdoctoral Young Scholars pursuing Egyptology or affiliated research, including those scholars in the first three years of post-doctoral research. The primary goal is to encourage the in-person presentation of scholarly papers at the SSEA Colloquium. The award may vary in amount and number from year to year, depending on the funds raised from the annual Katary lecture. In 2026, two awards are available for the amount of approximately $600. There are no restrictions regarding the specific application of the awarded funds. However, the intent is for the award to assist the student member/young scholar by offsetting the costs for any one of the following:

  1. To an applicant to present at the SSEA Scholars’ Colloquium;
  2. To an applicant to present their Colloquium paper to another academic conference, within or outside of Canada
  3. To an applicant to continue their studies via future travel to Egypt or an Egyptological museum collection whether by participating in an SSEA-sponsored excavation (see SSEA-sponsored projects at www.thessea.org) or conducting on-site research in Egypt or at an Egyptological library/museum within or outside of Canada.

Which category(ies) is/are awarded will depend upon the quality/significance of the proposed talks and/or the scope of the research indicated by the abstract submitted for the Scholars’ Call for papers process. Potential applicants must state their interest in the award at the time they submit their abstract to the Scholars’ Colloquium Committee, indicating the category, i.e. A, B or C, in which they are interested. Applicants are expected to carry out the purposes indicated in their application within 12 months of receiving the award.

Along with an award to defray costs associated with one of the above categories, the selected individual will have their SSEA membership for the year and Colloquium registration reimbursed,
