The Annual Symposium / Scholars' Colloquium

The Society for the Study of Egyptian Antiquities / Société pour l'Étude de l'Égypte Ancienne organizes an Annual Symposium and Scholars' Colloquium with a Poster Session. It normally takes place during the first weekend of November, in Toronto, although the Board of Trustees have also considered holding the Symposium in other Canadian cities with Egyptological connections.

The Annual Symposium consists of a number of lectures based around a particular Egyptological theme each year given by scholars who have studied aspects of that year's theme. Previous topics for the one-day Symposium in the past have included such themes as 'Gold of the Pharaohs', 'Animals in Ancient Egypt', 'Ægyptus: Egypt under Roman Rule' and 'Egypt's Threatened Treasures'.

The Scholars' Colloquium gives students, senior scholars and others the opportunity to present their individual research either by a spoken presentation or by a poster. Attendance at a Symposium weekend is open to all, whether studying Egyptology or interested in the subject, and whether a member of the society or not. In the past, the weekend has attracted speakers from Canada, North America, Europe and elsewhere around the world to present their research. The subject of presentations at a Scholars' Colloquium need not tie in with the theme for that year's Symposium.

Calls for papers to present short presentations/posters of scholars' research are sent out earlier in the year via our newsletters, and a number of academic channels for anyone considering presenting at the next Scholars' Colloquium, and potential speakers are decided upon in good time.
