History

At the 2006 Annual General Meeting in Toronto. It was decided that the Society could better serve its members if a chapter of the SSEA was established in Toronto, distinct from the Head Office. On Friday, May 4th, 2007 a meeting was held concerning the formation of a Toronto Chapter. During the course of this meeting it was decided to elect a provisional executive and that those elected would select from amongst themselves officers including a President, Secretary, Treasurer, and a minimum of four Vice-Presidents. The new Chapter, SSEA Toronto, took over responsibility for all Toronto area programming including the Mini-Lecture and Lecture Series and other special members’ events and social activities. The responsibility for printing and mailing of the Journal and the Newsletter; the Society's audit; the SSEA website; the Scholars' Colloquium and Symposium; and the Annual General Meeting will continue to reside with the Head Office. The Head Office will continue to provide funding to bring a speaker to each of the chapters annually.

The Toronto Chapter Executive has written a Charter for the Chapter.

Lecture Series

The Toronto Chapter currently runs 3 lecture series per year:
the Mini-Lecture Series, which allows advanced graduate students to present their research to SSEA members;
The Public Lecture Series, in which well-known Egyptologists from around the world present to the Chapters members;
and the Summer Lecture Series, in which local Egyptologists speak on popular topics chosen by the membership.

The Mini-Lectures are free of charge and open to all, as are the great majority of Public Lectures. There is a small charge to non-members to attend the summer lectures, and certain selected public lectures. Most events include refreshments and a draw for a prize. The Toronto Chapter also organizes social events such as movie nights and an Annual New Year's Party.

The SSEA encourages all members of the public to attend our lectures and events and we want to make this easier for people by providing information regarding accessibility of venues for events, and directions to lecture venues. Please contact The SSEA by email at sseatoronto@yahoo.ca or info@thessea.org or phone us at 647-520-4339 if you need directions to get to one of our events, or if you are a person with a disability and require further information or assistance.

The Toronto Chapter can also supply speakersto deliver lectures on topics relating to ancient Egypt in schools, libraries, community centres and at various events.
