Montreal Chapter / Chapitre de Montréal

Created in Montreal in November 1999, the Société pour l'Étude de l'Égypte Ancienne (SEEA) is the Montreal Chapter of the Society for the Study of Egyptian Antiquities (SSEA). The SSEA is a Toronto-based charitable organization founded in 1969 and duly incorporated the 10th of August 1970 under the laws of the province of Ontario. The Society was founded to stimulate interest in Egyptology, to assist those interested - professionals and non-professionals alike - with research and training in the field, and to sponsor and promote archaeological expeditions to Egypt.

In 1980, the Society established the Canadian Institute in Egypt, and on January 1, 1981, the Society and its Institute became an affiliate of the Canadian Mediterranean Institute. In September 1982 an official protocol was signed between Egypt and Canada which established the Institute as an official cultural presence in Egypt at its premises in Cairo. In 1984, a new Chapter of the SSEA was created in Calgary and in 1995, Dr. Robert Chadwick initiated the Montreal Chapter.

Créée en novembre 1999 à Montréal, la Société pour l'Étude de l'Égypte ancienne (SEEA) est le chapitre québécois de la Society for the Study of Egyptian Antiquities (SSEA) dont le siège social est à Toronto. Société à but non lucratif fondée en 1969 et incorporée le 10 août 1970 sous les lois de la Province de l'Ontario, la SSEA a pour but de stimuler l'intérêt pour l'Égyptologie, d'assister les professionnels et les non-professionnels dans leurs recherches en ce domaine et de promouvoir les expéditions archéologiques en Égypte.

En 1980, la SSEA fonde le Canadian Institute in Egypt et le 1er janvier 1981, la Société et son Institut s'affilient au Canadian Mediterranean Institute. En septembre1982, un protocole officiel est signé entre le Canada et l'Égypte pour établir l'institut canadien en tant que présence culturelle officielle ayant ses assises au Caire. En 1984, un nouveau chapitre de la SSEA voit le jour à Calgary et dès 1995, Dr. Robert Chadwick entame les démarches de création du chapitre du Québec à Montréal.

Grâce à la Société, les universitaires qui poursuivent des recherches en Égypte et au Soudan bénéficient des services de logistique et de secrétariat. Elle soutient aussi des travaux épigraphiques et archéologiques relatif à l'Osiris, maître de l'Éternité à Karnak en Haute-Égypte et elle participe activement au projet de l'Oasis de Dakhleh tout en assurant un support constant à d'autres expéditions comme le Projet du Wadi Tumilat de l'Université de Toronto.

Afin d'intéresser un plus vaste auditoire à l'Égyptologie, la Société organise une série de conférences publiques ainsi qu'une série de communications réservée à ses membres. Pour ceux-ci, la SSEA / Benben Publications publie un journal annuel (Journal of the Society for the Study of Egyptian Antiquities, or JSSEA) ainsi qu'un bulletin (Newsletter).
