Calgary Chapter![]() The Calgary chapter was established in 1984 under the presidency of Krzysztof Grzymski, then a professor at the University of Calgary. Leadership subsequently passed to Julius Szkrenyes, then to Lynne Nash. From 1985 to 2002, the Calgary Chapter President was Lynne Nash, who fulfilled virtually every other executive position as well. (In February of 1997, Ms. Nash was presented with an honorary lifetime membership in the SSEA for her commitment and contributions.) Dr. W. D. (Bill) Glanzman of Mt. Royal College was President of the Chapter until 2008, when he was succeeded by Steven Larkman. Dr. Szekrenyes is current President of the Chapter. The 2009-2010 Chapter executive is: Dr. Julius Szekrenyes - PresidentPaul English - Vice-President Janis Svilpis - Treasurer James Morison - Secretary/Webmaster Dr. Mary McDonald, Dept of Archaeology, University of Calgary - Executive member The chapter holds a series of lectures each year and produces a newsletter for chapter members, which is now by courtesy sometimes available online. Most lecturers are drawn from the local area, but every year there is a visiting speaker. Some of these have been drawn from as far away as England and Egypt. Past lecturers have included eminent Egyptologists such as T.G.H. James, Donald B. Redford, Donald Ryan, Aidan Dodson, Nancy Lovell, the late Winifred Needler, John L. Foster, Chief Inspector Abdul Rahman al-Ayedi, Steffen Wenig and almost every other trustee (past and present) of the Society. All lectures are held in room 162 of the Earth Science Building on the campus of the University of Calgary, @ 7:30 pm on the first Friday of each month from October to May (excluding January). Room 162 is a small ampitheatre on the ground floor of the Earth Science Bulding (ES on campus maps). All meetings are free to members and open to the public, so bring your friends. The Calgary Chapter of the SSEA maintains close connections with the Calgary chapter of the Canadian Society for Mesopotamian Studies. Each year the two society chapters host a lecture dealing with Mesopotamian-Egyptian connections and hold a joint potluck dinner. Membership in the Calgary ChapterThe Society membership year runs from September 1 to August 30. Membership dues may also be paid at the lectures. The portion of the membership dues which goes to the Toronto Society is used to pay for the Journal and Newsletter published by the national SSEA, to pay for the administrative costs of running the Society, to provide administrative support for scholarships and excavations in Egypt, and to fund the transportation expenses of out-of-town speakers to Calgary.
